In response to the rapid spread of the COVID-19(Omicron variant)
~Take all possible infection prevention measures to protect yourself and society~
YAMAZAKI Koetsu
President, Kanazawa University
Dear Students,
Since the beginning of the year, Japan has entered the 6th wave of COVID-19 caused mainly by the Omicron variant, and Priority Preventative Measures have been applied throughout Japan. In Ishikawa Prefecture, the hospital bed occupancy rate exceeded 30% and it has impacted the healthcare system. On January 27, the Priority Preventative Measures were applied throughout Ishikawa Prefecture as well. This is the first time that the entire prefecture has been included in the priority measures.
At Kanazawa University, we have confirmed many positive cases among students in several departments and graduate schools. Many of these cases were caused by "close contact" when returning home or during leisure activities. Although we had been expanding face-to-face classes and easing the restrictions on extracurricular activities since last October, considering these circumstances, we have raised the level of some of our activity guidelines as of January 19 and 25. These measures and warnings are intended to restore a safe and secure student life, and must be adhered.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that the Omicron variant is about three times more infectious than the Delta variant. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also suggested that the risk of severe disease is low for the Omicron variant, but that the number of infected people will explode. This has overwhelmed current medical services and the lives that could be saved may not be saved. In addition, the spread of the infection makes us difficult to maintain social functions because the number of people, including essential workers, who are unable to go to work will rapidly increase.
To maintain the medical system and social functions, it is important to control the peak of the 6th wave and resolve it as early as possible. What we can do is to strengthen our existing prevention measures, and experts call for it in the current situation. Kanazawa University is also preparing for the 3rd workplace vaccination against COVID-19, but it is essential to continue thorough measures such as “wearing masks”, “avoiding close contact”, and “implementing ventilation.”
If you have symptoms such as fever or malaise, please refrain from going out, including entering the campus, but make an appointment to see a doctor as soon as possible. If the result of COVID-19 test is positive, contact your affiliated student affairs section for further information. When you become a close contact, even if you don't have any symptoms, you should consider that you are already infected and may pass it on to others, and behave appropriately until your quarantine period ends.
For the 4th quarter final exam and the next academic year, which will be conduct face to face in principle, please keep records of your health observation and avoid situations of close contact. Students in the final year are in the process of completing their studies for graduation such as master's or doctoral theses. Please behave carefully and take thorough infection prevention measures so that we all can congratulate the graduates and new students at the graduation ceremony on March 22 and at the entrance ceremony on April 4.
