From August 17 to 22, the Strategic Project for Development of Doctoral Students and Research Promotion (HaKaSe+) conducted the HaKaSe+ Global Camp in the Philippines 2026. This original study-abroad program developed by HaKaSe+ aims to provide participants with opportunities to develop a global perspective and reflect on their own research and future career paths through training at international organizations and interactions with professionals active on the global stage. Following its inaugural implementation in FY2025, the program welcomed 11 selected HaKaSe+ students this year.

During the Camp, participants visited the JICA Philippines Office, San Lazaro Hospital/Nagasaki University Philippines Satellite, the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). They attended lectures delivered by experts working at the forefront of international cooperation, global health, and development policy, learning about the challenges facing the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the important roles played by international organizations in addressing those challenges. Participants actively engaged in discussions, asking questions from the perspectives of their respective academic fields and deepening their understanding of how these issues relate to their own research.

Students from diverse academic disciplines and national backgrounds spent the week together, exchanging views on their research interests and future career paths. Through visits to historical and cultural sites, they also gained firsthand insights into Philippine society and culture, discovering both similarities and differences between the Philippines and Japan while broadening their global perspectives.

Participants shared positive reflections on their experiences, including comments such as, “Hearing from Japanese professionals working at international organizations broadened my career possibilities,” “I became more confident participating in discussions in English,” and “The experience strengthened my desire to contribute to solving global challenges through my research.” The Camp provided a valuable opportunity for students to reconsider their research within the context of global issues and expand their perspectives toward future international engagement and careers.
