On August 6, the High School–University Connection Core Center of Kanazawa University held the KUGS High School–University Connection Program Live Seminar “Inquiry Workshop Opened Through Books: Expanding Connections of Knowledge and Sparking Questions from the Library” at the Ishikawa Prefectural Library, with five high school students participating.

This seminar aimed to help participants enjoyably acquire the research and thinking skills necessary for developing themes and questions in inquiry‑based learning, through encounters with books, and to discover new perspectives and questions that are difficult to obtain through internet searches alone.

Participants searched for and read books from the library shelves based on assigned themes or their own interests, and organized the information and insights they gained into a “Chain reaction style Map.” They then shared their maps with one another, exchanged discoveries, and engaged in activities to broaden their interests from a single book to related information and different viewpoints, ultimately finding new questions.

Participants commented, “I felt a greater expansion of knowledge when touching actual books compared to searching online,” and “I realized that the strength of a library lies in encountering one related book after another starting from a single book.”

The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to experience the significance of expanding knowledge from books and deepening inquiry activities while encountering different perspectives and new questions.
