Kanazawa University has received the “2025 GakuNin RDM User of the Year” award. This award is presented by the Research Data Infrastructure Steering Committee of the National Institute of Informatics (NII) to institutions that have achieved outstanding results in utilizing GakuNin RDM (*1), a platform for the proper management and sharing of research data, to establish efficient and appropriate research data management systems and to promote Open Science (*2) across regions and communities. Established last year, the award was conferred on Kanazawa University as only the second recipient.

The award ceremony was held on June 8 during the opening session of the "Academic Information Infrastructure Open Forum 2026," hosted by the National Institute of Informatics (NII). Mr. Hiroshi Masui (Vice President, Kitami Institute of Technology), Chief Examiner of the System Working Group of the Research Data Infrastructure Management Committee, who was in charge of the review, announced the award institution and the reason for the award, and Professor Yoshiya Kasahara, the Director of Emerging Media Initiative, Kanazawa University, was presented with a certificate of commendation and a plaque. Following the award ceremony, Professor Kasahara delivered an acceptance speech. The event concluded with a commemorative photograph taken together with Director General Sadao Kurohashi, the National Institute of Informatics (NII).

Kanazawa University has been working on the development of a research data infrastructure from an early stage, led by Emerging Media Initiative. Starting in 2025, we began operating the “Open Science System,” which enables end-to-end processing from research data management to open access publishing. We have also established a framework to visualize GakuNin RDM usage, ensure proper maintenance and management of research data, and support the planning of future research projects.

Furthermore, Kanazawa University has taken a leading role in establishing and operating the Hokuriku Research Data Infrastructure Consortium, contributing to the broader adoption and utilization of research data through the development of effective research data policies and outreach activities for neighboring universities. The University was also highly recognized for its wide-ranging contributions to the development of a sustainable research data infrastructure that connects institutions both within and beyond the University and promotes Open Science, including initiatives to provide research data through the integration of shared core facility equipment with GakuNin RDM, as well as efforts to verify technologies for the long-term preservation of research data.

*1  GakuNin RDM (Research Data Management)

GakuNin RDM is a research data management service provided by the National Institute of Informatics (NII). It serves as a cloud-based research data platform that enables universities and research institutions to securely store, share, and utilize research data. Through its version history management function, the platform helps mitigate risks such as data loss and tampering, ensuring the transparency and reliability of research. It also contributes to improving the reproducibility of research results and advancing Open Science.

*2  Open Science

Open Science is an approach that promotes the broad dissemination of research results and data, making them accessible not only to researchers in other fields and industry but also to the general public. By doing so, it enhances the transparency and reliability of research, facilitates more efficient research through the reuse of existing data, accelerates the social implementation of research outcomes, and contributes to solving societal challenges and creating new value.
