Kanazawa University was selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “WISE Program (Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education)” in FY2019 and has since implemented the Nano-Precision Medicine, Science and Engineering WISE Program over the past seven years.

In the ex-post evaluation conducted in FY2025, the final year of the program, by the WISE Program Committee, the program was evaluated as having “made efforts beyond the original plan and achieved excellent results, thereby fully accomplishing the objectives of the project,” and in March 2026, it received the highest rating, “S.”

Based on the research environment and research capabilities of the WPI Center(*), the Nano Life Science Institute (WPI NanoLSI), Kanazawa University, the program has worked to foster doctoral human resources who will lead the creation of new knowledge, generate value for the next generation, and bring innovation to society through collaboration with partner institutions. In addition, as the flagship of university-wide graduate education reform, the program has expanded initiatives to foster and produce more doctoral students through co-creation with diverse sectors across industry, academia, and government.

Under the leadership of President Takashi Wada, Kanazawa University has been highly evaluated for the establishment and effective implementation of the double-major and double-mentor system aimed at enhancing educational advancement and strengthening support for doctoral students, as well as for the development of a curriculum designed to cultivate a broad perspective, international mindset, and practical skills. The construction of a university-wide, cross-disciplinary degree program was also recognized.

Looking ahead, building on the accelerated graduate education reform initiated through this program, Kanazawa University will continue to advance a transition toward graduate education that fosters doctoral human resources in a more open environment. This will be achieved through co-creation with society based on industry–academia–government collaboration and international partnerships, centered on the “Future-Leading and Advanced Graduate-schools (FLAGs)” project, adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in FY2025, and the Organization for Excellence in Graduate Education (OEGE).
