On April 3, the Frontier Science and Social Co-creation Initiative held a hands‑on sowing activity for organic sake rice grown in Komatsu City, which is used by the NOGUCHI NAOHIKO SAKE INSTITUTE Inc. for sake brewing, as part of Project: AERU (*1). Seven Kanazawa University students, faculty, and staff members participated.

Since 2024, Kanazawa University has been collaborating with the NOGUCHI NAOHIKO SAKE INSTITUTE Inc. to develop and produce the Kanazawa University Original Sake (*2). This sowing activity was conducted with the cooperation of Gokokuji Farm and provided a valuable opportunity to take part in cultivating the organic sake rice variety Gohyakumangoku, which will be used for the 2026 edition of the Kanazawa University Original Sake.

Participants learned about the early stages of growing sake rice seedlings by covering the sown rice seeds with organic soil and transporting them to the seedling nursery.

Students who took part shared comments such as: “I had experience with rice planting and harvesting, but this was my first time hearing about sowing. It was a valuable experience.” “I’m happy to be involved from the very beginning of the sake‑rice production process. I can’t wait to see the final product.” “I want to continue participating in the later stages as well.”

Project: AERU will continue to create opportunities for students and local communities to “meet and learn” through hands‑on tours and events.
