Hosting the 2nd International University Collaboration Symposium on UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks

The 2nd International University Collaboration Symposium on UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks was held on March 3 at Kanazawa University’s Kakuma Campus. Approximately 60 participants, including representatives from universities, local governments, and organizations related to UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks from Japan and abroad, joined the symposium both in person and online.

The symposium opened with welcome remarks and a keynote presentation by Hans Thulstrup from the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. This was followed by a presentation by Associate Professor Aida Mammadova of the International Center for Japan Studies and Education, who serves as a UNESCO Chair holder, introducing Kanazawa University’s initiatives. Researchers and practitioners from Türkiye, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States also shared presentations on educational and research collaboration and student exchange programs utilizing UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks.

After the symposium, the invited international participants visited Hakusan City and paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Toshikazu Tamura. They then conducted a field study in Shiramine, a key site of the Mount Hakusan Biosphere Reserve and the Hakusan Tedorigawa UNESCO Global Geopark.This initiative provided an important opportunity to develop a university-led model of international educational collaboration utilizing UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks.
