On September 1, at the 16th Grant Research Achievement Awards Ceremony held at the Tekko Kaikan in Kayabacho, Tokyo, Professor Ryo Honda from the Institute of Science and Engineering, Faculty of Geosciences and Civil Engineering of Kanazawa University received the highest honor—the “Chairman’s Award.” The Steel Environmental Fund Grant Research Achievement Awards recognize researchers who have made outstanding contributions through their funded research.

In his award commemorative lecture, Professor Honda spoke about the “Development of a PFAS Wastewater Treatment Process Using the Microbial Capsule MBR Method.” Detoxifying persistent organic fluorine compounds (PFAS) typically requires significant energy, and contamination has become a widespread issue. However, the high-efficiency PFAS degradation technology developed by Professor Honda and his team uses microbial capsules with porous membranes, enabling low-cost and rapid detoxification. This innovation was highly praised for its potential to advance both drinking water purification and wastewater treatment.
