Event Details
The Kanazawa University Museum is holding a special exhibition titled “Ancient Tagami and Kakuma — Exploring the Past through Wooden Tablets and Ink‑Inscribed Pottery.”
In the Nara and Heian periods, when paper was a precious resource, people wrote characters on wooden slips known as mokkan. These were used for various purposes, including tags for goods, administrative documents, and writing practice. Mokkan excavated from palace and government sites bear inscriptions such as “Tagami‑go,” “Kaga,” and “Enuma District, Echizen Province,” names that remain familiar in our region today. Similarly, excavated artifacts known as ink‑inscribed pottery (bokusho doki) and incised pottery (kokusho doki) also reveal connections between ancient communities and the present‑day local area.
This special exhibition interprets and explains the ancient history of the university’s surrounding region through these excavated written materials—mokkan and ink‑inscribed pottery.
We look forward to welcoming you to the museum.
