【Title】Functions of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Living Body (From Bioactive Substances to Membrane Lipid Composition)
【Speaker】Emeritus Professor Takao Shimizu, University of Tokyo / Senior Fellow, National Institute for Global Health and Medicine
Bioactive substances produced from polyunsaturated fatty acids (arachidonic acid, DHA, etc.) have a variety of important functions in neurological, immune, digestive, and reproductive functions, and their active agents are the most widely used drugs. Emeritus Professor Takao Shimizu, University of Tokyo, Senior Fellow of the National Institute for Global Health and Medicine, is interested in the functions of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which change the composition of membrane phospholipids and are involved in flexibility, curvature, etc. He has been developing mechanisms for the biosynthesis of various phospholipids and simultaneous measurement methods for phospholipids. Among them, Dr. Shimizu's group has isolated 10 genes and analyzed mice with systemic or organ-specific defects of these genes. In this lecture, Dr. Shimizu will talk about the various actions of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and if time permits, he will also discuss the newly started natural product chemistry and drug development.
Dr. Shimizu is a world leader in fatty acid research. He has also made great efforts in educating students at the University of Tokyo School of Medicine and established the MD Researcher Training Program. This is a rare opportunity for Dr. Shimizu to visit Kanazawa, so please join us.
