Event Details
Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1905), who became a naturalized citizen of Japan as Koizumi Yakumo, studied and introduced Japanese culture while working as a teacher of English language and literature in the Meiji period. Immediately after his arrival in Japan, Yakumo was well known to his students as "Mr. Hearn," and Yakumo himself was delighted to be known as "Mr. Hearn.
As for Yakumo, we have an image that he was active in Matsue, Kumamoto, and Tokyo, but several of his students were also among the Professor of the Fourth Higher School, one of the predecessors of Kanazawa University. Masanobu Otani, Ryuji Tanabe, Shigetsugu Kishi... each of them has made a great contribution to passing on Mr. Hearn's achievements and collection to future generations. This exhibition introduces the connection between Yakumo and his students through the materials in the University Library collection.
*During the exhibition, the staff in charge will give a gallery talk explaining the exhibits. Please feel free to attend.
