Blazing a Trail for Japan’s National Universities

With society becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated, universities need to be reformed to keep pace with the changes. A command of diverse areas of expertise is required in order to solve complex problems. Moreover, academic fields are being developed that sometimes cannot be classified into the arts or the sciences. It is therefore important to introduce new interdisciplinary and integrated academic fields, while maintaining and improving the foundations of university education. Kanazawa University will break down the traditional walls between departments and subjects, and be restructured to comprise three colleges and 16 schools.

Located in the educational capital of the Hokuriku region, Kanazawa University is moving in a new direction to provide an even better education to people of promise who will contribute to society.

Fundamental Objectives

Kanazawa University aims to be “a research university that emphasizes education” and “a university that is open to the local community and to the world, and which inherits and brings innovations to mankind’s intellectual heritage”.

The university adheres to five fundamental principles in its basic guidelines for education and research: 1) to accept a diverse range of students and to train top-class people of talent, 2) to create extensive knowledge, ranging from the basics to practical applications, 3) to pioneer new subjects and to create industries, 4) to contribute to the local community and global society, and 5) to transmit information.

Kanazawa University independently promotes the above principles from the perspective of academic freedom. We also carry out activities that are rooted in our local community and, as a base in the Japan Sea Rim area, which is so important to the East Asian sphere, we transmit information to places all over the world, fulfilling our responsibilities to society.
